Rozie Kelly is a British novelist based in West Yorkshire. She studied English literature and creative writing at Warwick and Manchester before moving to Hebden Bridge, where she works for the Arvon Foundation hosting creative writing courses. She was shortlisted for the 2023 PFD Queer Fiction Prize and selected as one of eight participants in the inaugural Prototype Development Programme in 2024. That year, her manuscript Kingfisher won the NorthBound Book Award, whose support included publication with Saraband. Her debut novel appeared in April 2025. It follows a young male creative writing academic who becomes infatuated with an older, successful woman poet, destabilising his relationship with his male partner. His desire for her is bound up with his longing for her artistic success and way of life; illness and caregiving subsequently reshape their relationship. Told in the man’s first person, the novel explores how age, gender, money, and literary standing complicate the balance of power between people. In an interview with the Women’s Prize, Kelly explained that she wanted to examine power and control through a younger man’s objectification of an older woman, while giving his attraction dimensions beyond heterosexual desire or sexual appetite. As he cares for the poet, he also writes her story, bringing his attempts at selflessness into tension with the appropriation of another person’s experience. Kingfisher was shortlisted for the 2026 Women’s Prize for Fiction.
