Robert N. Butler（ロバート・N・バトラー、1927–2010）は、アメリカの医師、老年医学者、精神科医、作家。コロンビア大学で医学博士号（M.D.）を取得し、老年医学（ジェリアトリクス）の発展に大きく貢献した。加齢に対する偏見を意味する「エイジズム（ageism）」という言葉を提唱した人物として広く知られ、高齢者の権利擁護と高齢社会に関する研究を牽引した。初代アメリカ国立老化研究所所長を務めたほか、国際長寿センターを創設し、高齢化社会への理解と政策の発展に尽力した。1975年刊行の『Why Survive? Being Old in America』は、高齢者が直面する医療、福祉、社会的課題を包括的に論じた画期的な著作として高く評価され、1976年のピューリッツァー賞 一般ノンフィクション部門を受賞した。著書に『Why Survive?』『Love and Sex After 60』『The Longevity Revolution』などがある。
Robert N. Butler (1927–2010) was an American physician, geriatrician, psychiatrist, and author. He earned his M.D. from Columbia University and became one of the pioneers of modern geriatrics. Butler is best known for coining the term "ageism," bringing international attention to discrimination based on age and advocating for the rights and well-being of older adults. He served as the founding director of the National Institute on Aging and later founded the International Longevity Center, helping shape research and public policy on aging. His landmark book Why Survive? Being Old in America examined the medical, economic, and social challenges facing older Americans and won the 1976 Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction. His other notable works include "Love and Sex After 60" and "The Longevity Revolution."
