Robert Hellyer is an American historian specializing in Japan’s relations with the wider world from the early modern period through the nineteenth century. He teaches at Wake Forest University and studies Japan’s foreign relations, maritime trade, and the Meiji Restoration from a global perspective. In “Green with Milk and Sugar: When Japan Filled America’s Tea Cups,” published in Japanese as 『海を越えたジャパン・ティー―緑茶の日米交易史と茶商人たち』, he traces the former popularity of Japanese green tea in the United States and shows how merchants, war, racial attitudes, and consumer culture reshaped tea-drinking habits in both countries.
