Robert Galbraith is the pen name under which British novelist J. K. Rowling writes crime fiction. A longstanding reader of the genre, Rowling wanted to write contemporary detective stories in which a credible setting and the fair presentation of clues supported the mystery. Publishing under another name allowed her to seek responses to the work without the expectations attached to her established identity. She retained the name after her authorship became public to distinguish this part of her writing. “The Cuckoo’s Calling” (2013) introduced Cormoran Strike, a private investigator with a military background, and Robin Ellacott, who arrives at his London office and becomes his colleague. A model’s brother challenges the finding that her fatal fall in Mayfair was suicide and asks Strike to investigate. The novel placed the detective in contact with different social worlds across London. In “The Silkworm” (2014), the disappearance of a novelist leads to an unpublished manuscript containing damaging portraits of people in the publishing industry, and then to a murder investigation. Across the series, the separate mysteries develop alongside Strike and Robin’s changing professional and personal relationship. The eighth novel, “The Hallmarked Man,” was published in 2025. A dismembered body discovered in a silver shop is identified by police as that of a convicted armed robber, but a client believes it may be her missing boyfriend. The investigation connected the uncertain identity of the body with the disappearances of several men.
