Robert Caro is a biographer investigating the acquisition and exercise of political power. After newspaper reporting, he spent seven years interviewing people and examining unpublished records for The Power Broker. It traced how Robert Moses transformed New York's roads, parks and housing without holding elected office and won the Pulitzer Prize. Caro then undertook The Years of Lyndon Johnson, a multivolume study of Johnson's origins, elections, legislative power and presidency. Working reflected on archival reading, repeated interviews, living in places associated with his subjects, and the work of drafting and editing. It described a method of using individual lives to investigate institutions and the consequences of political decisions.
