Lorrie Moore (born 1957) is an American fiction writer, critic and essayist who grew up in New York State. After college she worked in a law firm before completing an MFA at Cornell University in 1982. Stories developed during that program became her debut collection, Self-Help (1985). Adapting the instructions and second-person address of advice books, the collection examines love, separation and family relationships. Moore began teaching creative writing at the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1984 and moved to Vanderbilt University in 2013. Birds of America (1998) follows people facing loneliness, illness and crises in marriage and parenthood, bringing conversational humor into contact with experiences of loss. It was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award. Her contribution to the short story has also been recognized with the Rea Award and the PEN/Malamud Award. Alongside fiction, Moore has written reviews and criticism on literature, film, television, music, and American politics and culture. I Am Homeless If This Is Not My Home (2023), published in Japanese as Shindeiru Motokano tono Tabi in 2026, follows Finn, a teacher visiting his dying brother, and his journey with Lily, a former girlfriend who has supposedly already been buried. The contemporary road narrative alternates with letters from the aftermath of the American Civil War. Linking the persistence of the dead and sibling grief with national division across two periods, the novel won the 2023 National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction.
