European Journalist of the Yearに選ばれた。
Laurent Richard is a French investigative journalist and documentary filmmaker whose work centres on international collaboration. He worked in television investigations and co-founded the French programme Cash Investigation. In 2017 he established Forbidden Stories, a network that continues the investigations of journalists who have been killed, imprisoned, or threatened. Its approach brings news organisations together to share evidence, verify findings, and publish collaboratively. The network coordinated the Daphne Project, continuing the work of murdered Maltese reporter Daphne Caruana Galizia. Richard was named European Journalist of the Year at Prix Europa in 2018. With Sandrine Rigaud, he wrote Pegasus, an account of the international investigation into spyware capable of penetrating smartphones. Beginning with a leaked list of around fifty thousand telephone numbers, the book follows the reporters and technical specialists who investigated suspected surveillance of journalists, human rights defenders, and other targets. It describes the verification of evidence from phones and the challenges of coordinating a sensitive investigation across newsrooms. The authors connect the technical capabilities of a product sold to governments with the experiences of people targeted by surveillance, examining its use against critics beyond its stated crime-fighting purpose. The Japanese translation, Sekai Saikyo no Spyware Pegasus, translated by Taiko Eguchi, was published by Hayakawa Publishing in 2025.
