Rebecca Solnit (1961–) An American writer, critic, and historian based in San Francisco whose work ranges across feminism, the environment, cities, disasters, politics, and social movements. Drawing on personal experience and historical events, she often examines whose voices are heard in society and whose experiences are ignored or silenced. In "Men Explain Things to Me," she begins with the familiar experience of men confidently explaining subjects to women while discounting their knowledge, then broadens the discussion to gendered power, sexual violence, domestic violence, and the social structures that prevent women from being heard.
