Mike W. Craven (born 1968), who publishes as M. W. Craven, is a British novelist of crime fiction and thrillers. Born in Carlisle and raised in Newcastle, he joined the British Army at sixteen. After leaving military service, he studied social work at Newcastle University and joined the probation service in Cumbria. He became a full-time author in 2015 after roughly sixteen years in probation work. A serious illness had renewed his interest in writing, and he developed a story about Avison Fluke, a detective returning to work after cancer treatment. That manuscript reached the shortlist for the Crime Writers’ Association’s Debut Dagger, helping him move toward publication. “The Puppet Show” (2018), published in Japanese as “Stone Circle no Satsujin,” introduced suspended detective Washington Poe and data analyst Tilly Bradshaw investigating a series of burnings at Cumbrian stone circles. Combining the investigation with the pair’s contrasting personalities, it won the CWA Gold Dagger in 2019. The fourth novel, “Dead Ground” (2021), translated as “Grey Rat no Satsujin,” begins with a body found at a bank-robbery scene and develops into an investigation involving serious crime and state secrets. It won the Ian Fleming Steel Dagger in 2022. In “Fearless” (2023), published in Japanese as “Kyofu o Ushinatta Otoko,” Craven began a new series set in the United States. Former US Marshal Ben Koenig, left unable to feel fear after a head injury, investigates the disappearance of his former superior’s daughter.
