M. W. Craven (born Mike W. Craven in 1968) is a British crime novelist. He joined the British Army at sixteen and, after leaving military service, studied social work with a focus on criminology, psychology, and substance misuse. He subsequently spent more than sixteen years working for the probation service in Cumbria. Craven is best known for his series featuring suspended detective Washington Poe and the exceptionally gifted analyst Tilly Bradshaw. In “The Puppet Show,” the first novel in the series, the pair investigate victims burned alive inside Cumbria’s prehistoric stone circles after Poe’s name is found carved into one of the bodies. The novel won the Crime Writers’ Association Gold Dagger in 2019.
