Mike Isaac is a journalist covering Silicon Valley companies and the technology industry. At The New York Times, he has reported extensively on Uber, Facebook, and other major technology businesses, and his Uber coverage won the Gerald Loeb Award for distinguished business reporting. His reporting on the company’s management and organizational culture developed into “Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber,” published in 2019 and later translated into Japanese as “Uber Senki.” Drawing on hundreds of interviews with current and former employees and previously unpublished documents, the book followed the ride-hailing company’s international expansion. It examined conflicts with taxi businesses and drivers, tactics for dealing with regulators, workplace harassment, and the management turmoil surrounding co-founder Travis Kalanick. Through those events, Isaac documented the governance problems accompanying rapid technological and financial growth. In his newsletter, he explained that covering the crises of 2017 left him wanting to write more about what had happened and what Uber’s trajectory revealed about Silicon Valley. The book was adapted into a Showtime television series in 2022, and he advised its creators on the reporting and the historical events behind the drama.
