Michael White (1959–2018) was a British science journalist and biographer. After studying at King’s College London and teaching chemistry in Oxford, he worked as science editor of the British edition of GQ and as a columnist for the Sunday Express. He wrote widely for general readers about the history of science and produced biographies of figures including Stephen Hawking, Isaac Newton, and Leonardo da Vinci. In "The Pope & the Heretic: The True Story of Giordano Bruno, the Man Who Dared to Defy the Roman Inquisition," White recounts the final years of Giordano Bruno, the philosopher who argued for an infinite universe containing innumerable worlds and was executed by the Roman Inquisition. The book traces Bruno’s arrest, his trial of nearly eight years, his refusal to renounce his beliefs, and the political and religious forces that culminated in his burning at the stake in 1600.
