マイケル・ホワイトは、アメリカの詩人、回想録作家。ユタ大学で博士号を取得し、ノースカロライナ大学ウィルミントン校で創作を教えてきた。詩集でコロラド詩賞やヴァッサー・ミラー詩賞などを受賞している。『Travels in Vermeer: A Memoir』（未邦訳）は、離婚と親権をめぐる争いのさなかにアムステルダム国立美術館を訪れ、フェルメールの「牛乳を注ぐ女」に心を動かされた体験から始まる回想録である。欧米各地の美術館でフェルメール作品と向き合う旅に、自身のアルコール依存、最初の妻との死別、家族の記憶を重ね、絵画を見る行為が喪失を受け止める時間へと変わっていく過程を描いている。同書は2015年の全米図書賞ノンフィクション部門ロングリストに選ばれた。
Michael White is an American poet and memoirist. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Utah and has taught creative writing at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. His poetry collections have received honors including the Colorado Prize for Poetry and the Vassar Miller Prize. "Travels in Vermeer: A Memoir" begins during a difficult divorce and custody dispute, when an encounter with Vermeer’s "The Milkmaid" at Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum gives White an unexpected source of consolation. His journeys to view Vermeer paintings in museums across Europe and the United States are interwoven with memories of alcoholism, the early death of his first wife, and family loss. The memoir traces how sustained attention to art becomes a way of confronting grief and rebuilding a life. It was longlisted for the 2015 National Book Award for Nonfiction.
