Michael Steinberger (born 1967) is a journalist and author covering food, wine, politics, economics, and technology. He worked as the Hong Kong correspondent for Maclean’s and wrote a wine column for Slate. His work has appeared in the Financial Times and The New Yorker, and he became a contributing writer for The New York Times Magazine. In “Au Revoir to All That,” he connected changes in French cuisine with wider economic and social pressures. Interviews with chefs, winemakers, farmers, bakers, and other artisans explored the changing international position of French cooking and the difficulties facing its culinary traditions. “The Wine Savant” turned to contemporary wine culture, moving from inexpensive bottles to prestigious Bordeaux, wine speculation, and biodynamic production. It considered shifting reputations among regions, numerical ratings, natural wine, and the pairing of wine with food. In 2019 he began sustained reporting on Alex Karp, who had been in his class at Haverford College. “The Philosopher in the Valley,” published in Japanese as “Palantir,” traced Karp’s background and ideas alongside the growth of the data company he leads. It examined the provision of technology to military and intelligence organizations and the relationship between surveillance technology and political power.
