Michael S. Molasky (born 1956) is an American scholar of Japanese culture and writer on music. Born in St. Louis, he studied Japanese literature at the University of Chicago and later taught at the University of Minnesota, Hitotsubashi University, and Waseda University. His work ranges from postwar Japanese literature and cultural history to jazz, blues, jazz cafés, and the drinking establishments that have shaped Japanese urban culture. His "Sengo Nihon no Jazu Bunka: Eiga, Bungaku, Angura" received the Suntory Prize for Social Sciences and Humanities. The book traces the reception of jazz in postwar Japan and its connections with film, literature, avant-garde art, and the underground culture of the 1960s, examining how an American musical form developed distinctive meanings and practices within Japanese society.
