Michael Robotham (born 1960) is an Australian novelist whose crime fiction explores the psychology of people caught up in violence and the pressures within families. Raised in small country towns, he began as a cadet newspaper journalist in Sydney in 1979. Over the next fourteen years he wrote for newspapers and magazines in Australia, Britain and the United States, including feature reporting for the Mail on Sunday. In 1991 he examined the letters and diaries of Nicholas II and Empress Alexandra made available in Moscow’s state archives; he also gained access to files on Hitler collected under Stalin. From 1993 he worked as a ghostwriter on autobiographies with politicians, musicians, adventurers and other public figures. His unfinished manuscript of “The Suspect” attracted competing publishers at the London Book Fair in 2002. Published in 2004, the novel launched his career in crime fiction through clinical psychologist Joe O’Loughlin, whose own secrets make him a suspect in the murder of a former patient. In the standalone “Life or Death” (2014), a man escapes from prison the day before his release. The mystery of his long imprisonment and missing robbery proceeds becomes a story about an attempt to save another life. It won the Crime Writers’ Association’s Gold Dagger in 2015 and appeared in Japanese as “Sei ka, Shi ka.” “Good Girl, Bad Girl” (2019), translated as “Tenshi to Uso,” began a new series pairing psychologist Cyrus Haven with Evie, a girl able to detect lies whose identity and past remain unknown. Her story runs alongside the investigation of a young figure skater’s murder, linking secrets in the girl’s past with those behind the crime. The novel earned Robotham his second Gold Dagger in 2020.
