Michael Reynolds (born 1945) is an American architect who developed the self-sufficient housing concept known as the Earthship. After graduating from the University of Cincinnati in 1969, he settled in Taos, New Mexico, and began experimenting with buildings made from natural and discarded materials, including earth-packed tires, aluminum cans, and glass bottles. Earthships integrate passive solar heating and cooling, renewable electricity, rainwater collection, wastewater treatment, and food production within a single structure. In “Earthship: How to Build Your Own, Vol. 1,” Reynolds explains the principles and construction methods behind homes designed to reduce dependence on public utilities and fossil fuels.
