Michael Polanyi (1891–1976) was a Hungarian-born British chemist, philosopher of science, and social thinker. After making major contributions to physical chemistry, he turned to philosophy, where he explored the nature of scientific knowledge and the importance of intellectual freedom. He is best known for introducing the concept of tacit knowledge—the idea that people know more than they can explicitly express—which has had a lasting influence on management, organizational theory, education, and the philosophy of science. His best-known work, "The Tacit Dimension," is regarded as a classic statement of the theory of tacit knowledge.
