Michael Paterniti is an American journalist and essayist whose long-form reporting has appeared in GQ, Esquire, Harper’s, and The New York Times Magazine. An eight-time National Magazine Award nominee, he is also known for “Driving Mr. Albert,” an account of his cross-country journey with the pathologist who removed and preserved Albert Einstein’s brain. “Love and Other Ways of Dying: Essays” gathers seventeen pieces from nearly two decades of reporting. Its subjects include the memory of the Cambodian genocide, a fatal accident from Paterniti’s youth, a man who lived for fifteen years in a Paris airport, and a Chinese man who tries to prevent people from jumping from a bridge. Through these encounters, the collection examines grief, memory, survival, and human connection. It was longlisted for the 2015 National Book Award for Nonfiction.
