M. John Harrison (born 1945) is a British novelist and critic whose work crosses the boundaries of science fiction, fantasy, speculative fiction, and literary fiction. He began publishing short fiction in New Worlds in 1968 and also worked for the influential magazine as an editor and critic. Throughout his career, Harrison has drawn on the conventions of space opera and fantasy while repeatedly questioning and subverting them. His representative novel, "Light," interweaves three narratives set in 1999 London and the twenty-fifth century, combining quantum physics, space travel, and artificial intelligence with characters driven by obsession, loneliness, and desire. The novel received the James Tiptree Jr. Award, while its sequel, "Nova Swing," won both the Arthur C. Clarke Award and the Philip K. Dick Award.
