Michael H. Bernstein is an American experimental psychologist, cognitive scientist, and author whose research explores the intersection of cognitive science and medicine. He is an Associate Professor of Radiology in the Department of Diagnostic Imaging at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, where he also serves as Director of the Brown Medical Expectations Lab. His research focuses on placebo and nocebo effects, patient expectations, clinician–patient communication, pain management, and the ethical application of psychological mechanisms to improve healthcare outcomes. Bernstein is internationally recognized for his work on how expectations influence health, including studies on reducing opioid use through placebo mechanisms and minimizing nocebo effects in clinical practice. In The Nocebo Effect: When Words Make You Sick (2024), he and his co-authors explain the science behind nocebo effects and examine how clinicians, researchers, and patients can reduce the harmful consequences of negative expectations while preserving informed consent.
