Michael E. Long, also known as Mike Long and published in Japanese as Michael Long, is a speechwriter, screenwriter, and playwright who has also written nonfiction about science and human behaviour. He studied physics and mathematics at Murray State University and pursued graduate studies in physics at Vanderbilt University. While in graduate school, he began performing comedy; he subsequently became a speechwriter for a United States senator. His clients have included members of Congress, cabinet secretaries, presidential candidates, and corporate executives. At Georgetown University, he taught writing, including speechwriting and business communication, and served as director of writing. More than twenty of his plays have been produced, and his screenwriting honours include selection as a finalist for the grand prize at the Slamdance Film Festival. With psychiatrist Daniel Z. Lieberman, Long coauthored The Molecule of More: How a Single Chemical in Your Brain Drives Love, Sex, and Creativity—and Will Determine the Fate of the Human Race, translated into Japanese as Motto! The book moved beyond a simple description of dopamine as a pleasure chemical to examine its roles in wanting what is not yet possessed and planning for the future, connecting those functions to love, creativity, and politics. His solo follow-up, Taming the Molecule of More: A Step-by-Step Guide to Make Dopamine Work for You, appeared in Japanese as Dopamin Dachi. It shifted the discussion toward everyday behaviour, using examples involving social media, shopping, romantic relationships, and gaming to explore ways of managing desire, developing creativity, and finding meaning in life.
