Michael Bar-Zohar (born 1938) is an Israeli historian, novelist, and former member of parliament whose work examines Israeli political leadership and intelligence history. Born in Sofia, Bulgaria, he immigrated to Israel in 1948. He studied economics and international relations at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and earned master’s and doctoral degrees in political science and international relations at the University of Paris. He worked as a journalist and as spokesman and media adviser to Defense Minister Moshe Dayan, and taught at Haifa University and Emory University. He served two terms in the Knesset and has written political biographies, intelligence histories, and spy novels. Reconstructing covert operations through interviews with political leaders, former intelligence chiefs, and operatives, “Mossad: The Greatest Missions of the Israeli Secret Service,” coauthored with Nissim Mishal, appeared in Japanese as “Mossad File.” It examines operations including the capture of Adolf Eichmann and intelligence campaigns concerning nuclear weapons programs. Following military operations from Israel’s founding onward, “No Mission Is Impossible: The Death-Defying Missions of the Israeli Special Forces,” also coauthored with Mishal, was published in Japanese as “Hiroku Israel Tokushu Butai.” Accounts of the Entebbe hostage rescue, raids into enemy territory, and other missions connect decisions by political and military leaders with the actions of soldiers carrying them out. His honors include Israel’s Sokolov Award and the Prime Minister’s Prize for Literature.
