Maxine Hong Kingston is a writer of family, memory and language in Chinese American experience. Raised in California, she lived in Hawaii and later taught creative writing for many years at UC Berkeley. The Woman Warrior combined stories heard from her mother, Chinese traditions and memories of girlhood to investigate a woman's voice in an immigrant family. It won the National Book Critics Circle Award. China Men extended stories of fathers and ancestors into histories of migration and labor and won the National Book Award. The Fifth Book of Peace connected a manuscript and home lost to fire with wartime memory and writing alongside veterans. Kingston moved between family storytelling, public history, memoir and fiction to investigate how excluded experiences become speakable.
