Matthew Sweet is a British journalist, cultural historian, and broadcaster, and a Fellow of the School of Advanced Study at the University of London. He has presented BBC programmes including “Free Thinking” and “Sound of Cinema” and worked as film critic for the Independent on Sunday. His writing explores British society through literature, cinema, and popular entertainment, examining changes in class and cultural values. In “Inventing the Victorians,” he investigates entertainment, consumer culture, and journalism to challenge familiar assumptions about Victorian prudery and repression. Published in 2026, “The Great Dictator: A Life of Barbara Cartland” was shortlisted for the Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-Fiction. Drawing on Cartland’s extensive archives and accounts from people who knew her, the biography traces the prolific romantic novelist’s marriages, divorce, publishing rivalries, and cultivation of celebrity. It examines how her image as the “Queen of Romance” emerged from the class tensions, scandals, and social upheavals of twentieth-century Britain.
