Matthew Desmond is a sociologist studying poverty, housing insecurity and racial inequality. He earned his doctorate at the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 2010, joined Harvard's Society of Fellows and later taught at Princeton. As principal investigator of the Eviction Lab, he combined research on housing displacement with a broader interest in ethnography and public policy. Evicted followed tenants and landlords in Milwaukee, investigating how the loss of housing produces and deepens poverty rather than merely reflecting it. The book won the Pulitzer Prize, National Book Critics Circle Award and Andrew Carnegie Medal. Poverty, by America shifted attention to the wider society, arguing that labor markets, housing, finance and public subsidies allow more affluent Americans to benefit from persistent deprivation. It considered institutional reforms and individual commitments to ending poverty.
