マシュー・デスモンド（Matthew Desmond、1979年生まれ）は、アメリカの社会学者、作家。プリンストン大学社会学部教授。アリゾナ州立大学卒業後、ウィスコンシン大学マディソン校で社会学博士号（Ph.D.）を取得した。専門は貧困、住宅問題、不平等で、フィールドワークに基づく研究を通じて、住居喪失や経済格差が人々の生活に与える影響を明らかにしている。住宅問題研究の第一人者として国際的に高く評価され、2016年刊行の『Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City』で2017年のピューリッツァー賞 一般ノンフィクション部門を受賞した。2023年には『Poverty, by America』を刊行し、アメリカの貧困構造を改めて問い直す作品として大きな反響を呼んだ。著書に『Evicted』『Poverty, by America』などがある。
Matthew Desmond (born 1979) is an American sociologist and author. He is the Maurice P. During Professor of Sociology at the Princeton University. After graduating from Arizona State University, he earned his Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. His research focuses on poverty, housing, and inequality, combining immersive fieldwork with rigorous social science to examine how eviction and housing instability shape the lives of low-income Americans. Widely regarded as one of the leading scholars of housing and poverty, he won the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction for "Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City." His later book, "Poverty, by America," further explores the structural causes of poverty and has become a major contribution to contemporary debates on economic inequality.
