Matt Pottinger (born 1973) is an American national security expert and former government official. After working as a journalist in China for Reuters and *The Wall Street Journal*, he served as a U.S. Marine in Iraq and Afghanistan before joining the first Trump administration. As Senior Director for Asia on the National Security Council and later Deputy National Security Advisor, he played a central role in shaping U.S. policy toward China and the Indo-Pacific. He is currently a Distinguished Visiting Fellow at the Hoover Institution and Chair of the China Program at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies. His edited volume *The Boiling Moat: Urgent Steps to Defend Taiwan* brings together leading policymakers and military experts to examine how the United States and its allies can strengthen deterrence and preserve stability across the Taiwan Strait.
