Masha Gessen (1967–) is a Russian-born American journalist. Their work focuses on Russian politics, authoritarianism, human rights, and LGBTQ+ issues, and they are a frequent contributor to The New Yorker. Through investigative reporting and political analysis, Gessen has chronicled the transformation of Russia from the collapse of the Soviet Union to the rise of Vladimir Putin, while also examining broader threats to democracy around the world. Their best-known book, "The Future Is History", follows the lives of four Russians to explain the resurgence of authoritarianism after the fall of the Soviet Union. The book won the 2017 National Book Award for Nonfiction.
