Marwan Hisham is a Syrian journalist. He joined anti-government demonstrations in his hometown of Raqqa in 2011 and later reported covertly from the city after it came under the control of the Islamic State, documenting civilian life and war while concealing his identity. Since 2014, he has covered Syria, Iraq, and Turkey, contributing to "The New York Times," "Vanity Fair," "The Intercept," and "Foreign Policy." In "Brothers of the Gun: A Memoir of the Syrian War," Hisham recounts how he and two university friends joined the uprising and then followed sharply different paths as the revolution became a civil war—one becoming an Islamist fighter, another being killed, and Hisham eventually becoming a journalist in exile. Illustrated by Molly Crabapple, the book records life under government bombardment and Islamic State rule and was longlisted for the 2018 National Book Award for Nonfiction.
