Martin Cruz Smith (1942–2025) was an American novelist born in Reading, Pennsylvania. He worked as a journalist before turning to fiction and became known for his crime novels featuring Moscow investigator Arkady Renko. His breakthrough novel, “Gorky Park,” opens with the discovery of three bodies beneath the snow in a Moscow park during the Cold War. Their faces and fingertips have been mutilated to prevent identification, and Renko’s investigation leads him into the darker workings of Soviet society. The novel won the Crime Writers’ Association’s Gold Dagger in 1981, and Smith received the Mystery Writers of America’s Grand Master Award in 2019. Across the Renko series, he followed the upheavals of Soviet and Russian life, from the collapse of the Soviet Union to contemporary Russia, placing a persistent investigator’s search for the truth in conflict with political power and institutional interests.
