Markus K. Brunnermeier (1969–) is a German economist and the Edwards S. Sanford Professor of Economics and director of the Bendheim Center for Finance at Princeton University. His research examines financial crises, asset-price bubbles, liquidity, monetary policy, and international finance, with particular attention to how market disruptions spread through financial institutions and the wider economy. In his representative book, “The Resilient Society,” he distinguishes robustness—the ability to withstand shocks without changing—from resilience—the capacity to adapt and recover after disruption—and considers how economic and social institutions can prepare for crises that cannot be predicted or entirely prevented.
