Mark Schieritz (born 1974) is a German journalist covering economic and financial policy and politics. He studied political science and economics at the University of Freiburg and the London School of Economics, where he earned a master’s degree. He began his journalistic career at Financial Times Deutschland, spending seven years there and heading its financial-markets desk. He later covered economic policy and the euro-area economy for Die Zeit and became deputy head of its politics section in Berlin. His economic journalism received the Ernst Schneider Prize of the German chambers of industry and commerce and the Keynes Society’s media prize. In his 2013 German-language book “Die Inflationslüge,” he examined how fear of inflation could distort household investment decisions and responses to financial crises, relating Germany’s memory of hyperinflation to contemporary economic policy. His 2025 book “Zu dumm für die Demokratie?”, presented in its publisher’s rights catalogue as “Too dumb for democracy,” appeared in Japanese in 2026 as “Boso Shite Shimau Min’i.” It shifts attention from dissatisfaction with politicians to voters’ choices and responsibilities when they support anti-democratic movements. Schieritz examined tensions between the popular will and the institutions of a free society, arguing that liberal democracy depends on the attitudes and values of citizens as well as on political leaders.
