Mark Costello is an American novelist and former federal prosecutor. He published his first novel, “Bag Men,” under the pseudonym John Flood while working as a prosecutor in New Jersey. His novel “Big If,” a finalist for the 2002 National Book Award for Fiction, follows Secret Service agents assigned to protect the vice president. Bringing their professional responsibilities into contact with private anxieties and troubled personal lives, the novel explores the tensions between national security and individual vulnerability through political satire. Costello also coauthored “Signifying Rappers” with David Foster Wallace, examining rap music, race, and American culture. Across fiction and cultural criticism, his work considers how institutions and popular culture shape the ways people think, behave, and understand their surroundings.
