Mark Adams (born 1967) is an American journalist, travel writer and editor from Oak Park, Illinois. He has worked as a contributing editor for National Geographic Adventure and written for publications including GQ and Rolling Stone. His nonfiction combines historical research with journeys that retrace earlier expeditions or investigate accounts of lost cities. Following the route of Hiram Bingham’s 1911 expedition in Peru, “Turn Right at Machu Picchu: Rediscovering the Lost City One Step at a Time” brings together Inca history, the explorer’s records and Adams’s own experiences in the Andes. Despite having written extensively about adventure, Adams began the journey with little experience of outdoor life, traveling with an Australian guide through remote mountain landscapes. His central question concerns the purpose of Machu Picchu, but the book also examines Bingham’s contested reputation, the meaning of archaeological “discovery” and disputes over artifacts removed from Peru. Humor about his own difficulties accompanies an investigation into how accounts of exploration are constructed. By placing historical narratives alongside the places they describe, Adams explores both the practical experience of travel and the assumptions inherited from earlier travelers.
