Marjane Satrapi (born 1969) is an Iranian-born writer, graphic novelist, and filmmaker whose work explores revolution, exile, identity, and freedom with striking honesty, wit, and visual simplicity. She is best known for *Persepolis*, an autobiographical graphic memoir that recounts her childhood during the Iranian Revolution and her later experiences in Europe. The book became an international bestseller and helped establish the graphic memoir as a major literary form. Satrapi also co-directed the acclaimed animated film adaptation of *Persepolis*, which won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature.
