Marianne Wiggins (1947–) is an American novelist born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, who also spent many years living in Europe. Her fiction interweaves history and personal memory to explore love, loss, family ties, and humanity’s impact on the natural and social worlds. “Evidence of Things Unseen” was a finalist for the 2003 National Book Award for Fiction and the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. In “Properties of Thirst,” set in California during the Second World War, she brings together conflicts over water resources, the incarceration of Japanese Americans at Manzanar, and a family’s intimate struggles. Her work connects the desire to possess land and resources with the lives of people caught in the consequences of national policy.
