Maria Stepanova (born 1972) is a Moscow-born poet, essayist, and journalist. The author of numerous poetry collections and books of essays, she also helped establish and edit the independent Russian cultural publication Colta.ru. She left Russia following its full-scale invasion of Ukraine and is now based in Berlin. “In Memory of Memory,” which uses family photographs, letters, and diaries to examine the relationship between private memory and twentieth-century Russian and European history, won Russia’s Big Book Award and was shortlisted for the 2021 International Booker Prize. “The Disappearing Act” follows an exiled writer stranded in an unfamiliar town, where an encounter with a travelling circus becomes an exploration of national belonging, guilt, language, and the possibility of abandoning an old identity. Sasha Dugdale’s English translation was longlisted for the 2026 National Book Award for Translated Literature.
