Maria Semple (born 1964) is an American novelist and screenwriter. After studying English at Barnard College, she worked as a television writer on shows including "Arrested Development," "Mad About You," and "Ellen" before turning to fiction. Her novel "Where'd You Go, Bernadette" spent more than a year on The New York Times bestseller list and was shortlisted for the Women’s Prize for Fiction. The novel follows Bee, a fifteen-year-old girl who pieces together emails, letters, and other clues after her mother Bernadette—a once-promising architect who has withdrawn from life in Seattle—suddenly disappears, combining comedy with a story about a woman trying to recover her creative identity and a daughter determined to understand her.
