Marcia Hutchinson (born 1962) is a British novelist who grew up in Bradford with Jamaican parents of the Windrush generation. She became the first pupil from her comprehensive school to attend Oxford and studied law at Brasenose College. After working as a solicitor, she founded Primary Colours, an educational publisher producing resources on cultural diversity. Her work in multicultural education was recognised with an MBE in 2010. She moved to Manchester in 2012, became involved in community activism, and was elected to the city council in 2021. Writing with Kate Griffin under their joint pen name Lila Cain, she published the historical novel The Blackbirds of St Giles in 2025. It follows Black people who escaped enslavement in Jamaica and reached London in the 1780s after the American War of Independence, exploring the gap between promised freedom and the realities of poverty and exploitation. Her first solo novel, The Mercy Step, appeared in July that year. Inspired by her childhood in Bradford, it presents a Jamaican British household in the 1960s through the eyes of Mercy, a young girl living with her father’s violence, her mother’s religious commitments, and the competing needs of her siblings. Books, libraries, and an imaginary world offer refuge as Mercy seeks a place of her own; the child’s observations combine humour with an account of domestic abuse. The novel was shortlisted for the 2026 Women’s Prize for Fiction and won the Discover category at the British Book Awards.
