マルセル・プルースト（Marcel Proust、1871年 - 1922年）は、フランスの小説家。パリ郊外のオートゥイユに生まれ、幼少期から喘息に悩まされながら文学や社交界に親しみ、1896年に最初の著書『楽しみと日々』を刊行した。晩年は外界の音を遮るため壁をコルクで覆った部屋にこもり、長篇小説『失われた時を求めて』（原題 À la recherche du temps perdu）の執筆に没頭した。同作では、マドレーヌの味から幼少期の記憶がよみがえる有名な場面をはじめ、語り手の記憶を軸に、恋愛や嫉妬、芸術、社交界、同性愛、老い、死などを描きながら、過去の経験が記憶によって再び意味を持ち、やがて文学作品へと結びついていく過程を全7篇にわたって描いている。
Marcel Proust (1871–1922) was a French novelist and one of the major figures of twentieth-century literature. Born in Auteuil, then on the outskirts of Paris, he suffered from asthma from childhood and moved between literary circles and Parisian high society before devoting his later years to writing. His major work, "In Search of Lost Time" ("À la recherche du temps perdu"), was published in seven parts between 1913 and 1927, with the later volumes appearing posthumously. Beginning with the narrator's memories of childhood—including the famous episode in which the taste of a madeleine unexpectedly brings the past back to life—the novel explores love, jealousy, art, society, sexuality, aging, and death, ultimately tracing how seemingly lost experiences can be recovered through memory and transformed into literature.
