Marc Benioff is an American business executive and the co-founder, chair and CEO of Salesforce. After thirteen years at Oracle, he co-founded Salesforce in 1999, building a business that delivers customer relationship management software through the cloud. From the company’s beginnings, he incorporated philanthropy through the “1-1-1 model,” committing one percent each of its equity, products and employees’ time to community causes. Recounting the company’s development and the decisions behind its culture, “Trailblazer: The Power of Business as the Greatest Platform for Change,” co-written with Monica Langley, connects Benioff’s entrepreneurial experience with his views on corporate responsibility. The book examines how values including trust, customer success, innovation and equality can influence hiring, organizational practices and executive decisions. It also describes his efforts to make social contribution part of the company’s operations rather than an activity separate from its commercial goals. Benioff argues that businesses have responsibilities to employees, customers and communities alongside shareholders, presenting his own management experience as a framework for considering how corporate growth and social commitments can be pursued together.
