Marc Levinson is an American economist, historian, journalist, and author specializing in international trade, transportation, globalization, and economic history. He worked as a business writer at Newsweek and as finance and economics editor of The Economist before joining JPMorgan Chase, where he developed the firm's industry economics function and environmental research for institutional investors. He later served as a senior fellow for international business at the Council on Foreign Relations and managed transportation and industry analysis at the Congressional Research Service. In "The Box: How the Shipping Container Made the World Smaller and the World Economy Bigger," Levinson traces the development and global standardization of container shipping, beginning with trucking entrepreneur Malcom McLean, and shows how a seemingly simple box dramatically reduced transportation costs, transformed ports and manufacturing, expanded international trade, and helped create the logistics system underpinning the modern global economy.
