Manisha Sinha is an Indian-born American historian. She earned her Ph.D. from Columbia University and is a professor of American history at the University of Connecticut. Her research focuses on slavery and abolition, the Civil War, and Reconstruction. In "The Slave’s Cause: A History of Abolition," Sinha reconstructs the abolitionist movement from the era of the American Revolution through the Civil War, placing Black activists, enslaved people who resisted bondage, women, and radical reformers at the center of the narrative. Rather than presenting abolition as chiefly the work of white reformers, the book shows how Black resistance and international ideas of human rights shaped a broad social movement. It was longlisted for the 2016 National Book Award for Nonfiction and won several honors, including the Frederick Douglass Book Prize.
