Madhumita Murgia is an Indian-born journalist specializing in artificial intelligence and its social consequences. She studied biological sciences at the University of Oxford and worked on AIDS vaccine research before training in science journalism at New York University. After working at Wired UK and The Daily Telegraph, she joined the Financial Times, where she served as European technology correspondent before becoming the newspaper’s first artificial intelligence editor in 2023. Her reporting covers AI, surveillance, data, privacy, and regulation. “Code Dependent: Living in the Shadow of AI,” shortlisted for the 2024 Women’s Prize for Non-Fiction, follows people including Kenyan data labelers, delivery workers managed by algorithms, and children assessed by predictive systems, showing how low-paid labor and biased data shape AI’s effects on employment, education, public services, and human rights.
