Yu Matsumoto is a Japanese translator of English-language nonfiction on economics, development, and social issues. He began translating professionally in 2006, working on publications from English into Japanese and on commercial material in both directions. He translated Angus Deaton’s “The Great Escape,” a long historical account of improvements in health and wealth and the inequalities that have accompanied them. In Jerry Z. Muller’s “The Tyranny of Metrics,” Matsumoto translated an examination of numerical performance assessment in schools, hospitals, companies, and other institutions, including ways measurement can displace the purposes it was intended to serve. He also translated Duena Blomstrom’s “People Before Tech,” which considers trust and working relationships within teams as conditions for organizational change, rather than relying solely on the introduction of digital tools and methods.
