Tsuyoshi Matsumoto (born 1959) is a Japanese translator of English-language fiction and nonfiction. Born in Wakayama Prefecture, he graduated in sociology from the University of Tokyo’s Faculty of Letters. His translations of Ross Thomas’s novels, including “Chinaman’s Chance” and “The Seersucker Whipsaw,” explore political intrigue, deception, and the conflicting interests of people working around the edges of power. In Coco Krumme’s “Optimal Illusions,” he translates an examination of how optimization shapes institutions and everyday life, and what systems organized around efficiency and measurable outcomes can overlook. His nonfiction translations also include David Lyon’s “Pandemic Surveillance,” which considers the relationship between technology, public emergencies, and social control.
