Michiharu Kusunoki (born 1957) is a Japanese manga artist whose work explores young people’s lives around motorcycles and the working lives of people involved with cars. Born in Kochi Prefecture, he made his manga debut in 1977. His “Aitsu to Lullaby,” which began serialization in Weekly Shonen Magazine in 1981, linked motorcycling with adolescence through the friendships and romances of high-school students. In “Wangan Midnight,” Akio encounters a Fairlady S30Z at a scrapyard, setting in motion a story about people drawn to the car known as the Devil Z. Racing on Tokyo’s expressways and the work of tuning cars became the framework for relationships among drivers and mechanics. Kusunoki continued developing stories about cars and the people around them. The first collected volume of “Shutoko SPL Zero” appeared in 2025. Set in 1994, it revisited the youth of Keisuke Kudo, who would later run a specialist tuning business. Beginning when Kudo entered the car world at eighteen, the story followed how encounters with people at a tuning shop and others around him shaped his knowledge of cars and the choices he made.
