Senji Kuroi (1932–2026) was a Japanese novelist from Tokyo. After graduating from the University of Tokyo’s Faculty of Economics, he worked at Fuji Heavy Industries while writing fiction, becoming a full-time writer in 1970. Associated with Japan’s “Introspective Generation,” he explored the inner lives of people within workplaces, families, and ordinary social relationships. His linked novel “Life in the Cul-de-Sac,” translated into English by Philip Gabriel, follows four families in a suburban neighborhood. Through relationships among spouses, parents, children, and neighbors, it examines the distance that can persist between people living in close proximity. The book won the Tanizaki Prize in 1984. In “Oi no Fukami,” an essay collection on advanced age, Kuroi records his passage from his eighties into his nineties through concrete changes in daily life: shorter walks, difficulty swallowing water, and the bewilderment of forgetting a PIN. Across fiction and essays, he examined the loneliness and unease found in working, living with others, and growing old. He also served as president of the Japan Writers’ Association and the Japan Art Academy.
