Yoko Kuyama (born 1975) is a Japanese translator and essayist who translates Swedish literature and nonfiction and writes about Nordic life and society. Born in Hyogo Prefecture, she graduated in English literature from Kobe College. After working for a travel company specializing in Northern Europe and the Swedish Embassy’s trade department, she moved to Sweden with her husband and daughter in 2010. Alongside translating Nordic crime fiction, she taught Japanese at a local high school and worked on reporting for Japanese media. Her Japanese translation of Anders Hansen’s “Skärmhjärnan,” known in English as “The Attention Fix” and published in Japanese as “Sumaho No,” brought readers an account of how smartphone use relates to attention, memory, sleep, and mental health, viewed through the mismatch between brain evolution and modern environments. In her own “Sweden no Hoikuen ni Taiki Jido wa Inai: Iju shite Wakatta Kosodate ni Yasashii Shakai no Kurashi,” she drew on moving abroad with a young daughter to examine childcare, working life, and the sharing of domestic responsibilities, describing how institutions and everyday practices support families. Her “Swedenjin wa Naze Asa no Sanjikan de Shigoto ga Katazuku no ka” combined interviews with local businesspeople and scientific findings to explore concentration, breaks, and the relationship between work and life when seeking results within shorter working hours.
