Yayoi Kusama (1929–2026) was a Japanese avant-garde artist and novelist. Born in Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture, she studied traditional Japanese painting at the Kyoto Municipal School of Arts and Crafts. She moved to the United States in 1957 and became active in New York, producing paintings composed of repeated nets, sculptures covered with protruding forms, mirrored installations, and public happenings. Through the proliferation of motifs such as polka dots, nets, and pumpkins, she visualized infinity, self-obliteration, and the place of the individual within the cosmos. She received Japan’s Order of Culture in 2016. Her representative "Infinity Mirror Rooms" series places lights, dots, and sculptural objects inside mirrored spaces, causing them to repeat beyond any visible limit. By incorporating viewers’ reflected bodies into this multiplication of images, the installations dissolve the apparent boundary between the individual and the surrounding space.
